Weird Writing StyleFirst, the formatting in which the dialogue is part of the paragraphs. Then there was the way the sentences were written. For example, instead of saying: "I smirked and tried to think of a good comeback" the author writes: "I make a smirk of my lips..." (huh?), or "...if I could have a few ounces of your beauty..." (um...?). "Her eyes have something strong like black coffee brewing in them." (um...again). "The festival draws a huge crowd and makes very much money." (just...wow and not in a good way).
She also likes to explain things in parenthesis a LOT. Then there's the lack of knowledge in so many things. For example, when Sveta is pregnant and gets her sonogram for the first time, the nurse (who should know better) asks if she wants to know the sex of the baby -- at 10 weeks old. If the nurse (or the author) was knowledgeable about actual pregnancies, a sonogram doesn't reveal sex until 18 weeks. 14 weeks at the earliest. What made me laugh out loud (again, not in a good way) was that she asks the nurse if she can borrow the hospital's computer to email her sister in Russia...as if a hospital would allow someone to borrow their system. More plausible would have been stopping by the library or an internet café. And then she tells her husband that the baby will arrive in "...more like ten months" not nine. In addition to the weird, naïve, inexperienced, unknowledgeable writing, there's the plot, or lack thereof. There was literally nothing of interest in this story. The plot and the characters were flat, all the way through. Recommended? Not really.
