This may seem like a book that is only geared towards musically inclined individuals, but it’s not.
The premise of this book discusses how we were created, commanded, compelled to sing. Not only with our heart and mind but with family and church and not just individually but as a congregation. How singing can affect our daily lives. It also touches on how our singing as a church can be a witness to others, no matter how our voices sound because we aren’t singing to bring attention to ourselves, but to glorify God.
I’ve felt the compulsion to sing on occasion, I’ve even sung my prayers a couple times because I couldn’t find the words to say. But I didn’t know when I started this study that we were created to sing, no matter your singing ability, I just thought some people felt music more than others. I didn’t even know it was commanded that we sing. I also didn’t know that not all songs are worship songs, some songs aren’t even biblically based. Other songs don’t even focus on God but are more encouraging to oneself. Now, mind you positive, encouraging songs have their place, but not necessarily in a Sunday morning worship and this book explains why. This new way of looking at songs opened my eyes to what I’m listening to, though not bad, it did make me realize how many songs I enjoy say ‘I’ or ‘me,’ and wouldn’t be considered worship songs. Once the authors explained the rhyme and reason behind singing, they show you how you can implement what you’ve learned on your own, with your family and inside your church to help the congregation to sing together. My favorite section was Chapter 7: The Radical Witness When Congregations Sing! It touched on how our singing can be witness to others because you can’t fake how a song affects you. If you truly are touched by the song it will show in the way you sing. This chapter also touched on missional hymns. Frank Houghton’s, “Facing a Task Unfinished,” 1931, stood out to me the most on why singing the gospel should be one of the ways to share it. I really enjoyed this book and plan to find some of the songs and other books mentioned throughout it to read as well.
