"No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting"

The information in this book is very simplistic and, quite frankly, a little naïve. There is little thought or depth. For instance, in the section Cost of Land, the author does "napkin math" and quickly (and I do mean quickly) formulates the "general budget" you'll need for your acreage. I get that this is an example, but the author should have at least stated the cost of acreage is generally based on the state, type of land usage (residential, business, farming, etc.), and location of that land.
The same with building a home. He gives cost ranges but doesn't feel the need to expound upon what might be less expensive as opposed to what might cause the cost to skyrocket. Everything seems to be simple examples, not actual fact. Such as the checklist of things to do for building your house. In this chart he appears to give names and phone numbers. Not certain if these are legit places but if so, not really a great thing to do, especially as someone reading this may not be anywhere near where this person lives and thus that information is useless to the reader. There were many other areas in which this book should have been better done with more detail, less guess-work. I may have been more impressed had the individual actually did all of the necessary research, built the off-grid home, and then wrote this as a first-hand experience. As it stands now, I didn't learn anything of value. I have learned more watching YouTube videos. That's disappointing, as my husband and I are always discussing/researching methods to be more self-reliant when we finally purchase our own land and build our home.
