"No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting"

The clash between witchcraft and the church causes significant war within the main character, Calec, who is both accepted and "needed". The story takes place during the middle ages and opens with the possibility of a return of the plague (I won't go into any more detail to prevent spoilers).
I loved the writing style, which felt true to the time. Not perfect, but if you weren't raised then, you aren't going to get it perfect. Still, it had a real feel to it that I appreciated. The writing was superb also. The flow was maintained, and while not an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, it did have moments when that chill raced along the spine. The dialogue was well done, which is something a lot of writers miss the mark on. It felt as if I were listening to actual people conversing. Mechanically sound. I picked it up because I liked the cover art, and now I'm glad I did. This is a must read. What an excellent book
