A good introduction

Wanting to branch out in genres and to read another classic, we decided on this adaptation of Frankenstein. It’s recommended reading age is 7+. I read it with my son, who was eleven at the time, and he found it creepy but still enjoyed the book, not wanting me to stop reading each night before bed. My daughter, who was eight at the time, didn’t want to read it at all, as she found it too creepy, so we read her something else.

It seems odd to rate the adaptation, since the person doing the adapting didn’t technically write the story, but it still takes skill to condense and adjust a novel for a younger audience while still maintaining the essence of the original story. So, that is where our focus lies in this review.

This condensed novel earned four stars from us in that the characters were well maintained, the plot didn’t have any issues from being condensed, the dialogue was easy for the younger audience to read and understand and we didn’t stumble over any editorial issues due to the changes made. One star was removed due to no emotional connection with the characters or their turmoil.

 This is a good introduction for children to the original story and can be a good determiner if you’d like to read the original classic or if you are happy with simply the bones of the story.
