Good book but weird in some places

A general example is that the author will use "into" instead of "in" or "onto" instead of "on", which will change the connotation of the sentence and make it read wrong. Or he'll use words that make the reader visualize something nonsensical, such "grazed his mind" "a set of distant gunfire".
Sometimes the author veered into description that was too clinical, detached, or far too much description: "Almost falling over his own feet, he huffed and puffed down the stairs with suitcases under each arm, and he reached the bottom of the stairs, where he rushed to his car, which had its trunk open." Then there was the dialogue which was a regurgitation of every action movie ever made, not any originality. For example, Olivia has been called into Captain McNamara's office for a reprimand: "What in hell were you thinking?" "Takin' out the garbage" "Well, congratulations. You made the six o'clock news...You know we have a lot of eyes on us these days." "Until IA (written I. A) completes an investigation, I need to suspend you." (I can't write her cliched response because it has a swear word). The plot wasn't bad, but it was if the author ran the entire thing through a translator and went with whatever it spit out, because it just reads very stilted, not realistic. I gave it three stars because, again, the story wasn't horrible and neither were the characters (just not realistic).
