You are special just the way you are
This cute story teaches little ones that “God has blessed each of us with unique gifts and talents,” but in a manner I’ve personally not seen before.
When Honk finds a statue of a camel with wings and becomes overwhelmed with the idea that camels can or could have flown at one point. He rushes to his friends, specifically the old frog Ponder, to see if camels could indeed fly. Even though told gently by his friend Ponder that ‘God made us with special gifts but no, camels don’t fly,’ Honk is determined to prove his friends wrong. What was different about this story was that the old frog didn’t try to change his friend’s mind, he simply let his friend learn for himself and prayed for him privately. When Honk finally came to Ponder after failing many times to fly; all bruised, feeling down and expecting an ‘I told you camels don’t fly’ speech, Ponder just asked him what he learned and helped him understand that he was special just the way he was. With an endearing ending to boot, I really love this book’s message and the way it was done, and my children enjoyed reading about Honk’s various attempts to fly. This one’s a keeper and I look forward to reading the rest of the Noah’s Park series.
