The very first sentence I thought it was an adult speaking to a child, then the author writes: 'The three-year-old had just...'.
The reason for the three stars is because the writer, while doing a great job with plot, character development, and overall mechanics, tends to jump tenses on occasion, which threw me off, primarily using 'has' when 'had' should be used.
Since When Did Foreign Terrorists......speak as if they were born in the good old U.S. of A?
I Can't Quite Put My Finger On ItMaybe it's the tense in which the book is written, maybe it's the lack of details or the less-than-realistic dialogue, I don't know for certain. Maybe it's all three. But the pacing, plot, dialogue and tense make this book tedious to read.
There were quite a few creepy moments that could have been made creepier had they been given a little more time to develop; been a little less rushed. The writing was well done. I didn't see any flaws. The story was a bit ho-hum, but I get that it's meant for young children.
A Really Nice StartWriting: Excellent. I found the author to be articulate and his writing style made it easy to follow the information provided.
So Well WrittenSarah wasn't a major character in this novel (I won't give too much away), but the opening chapter was so well written that I felt for her as much as I did for her husband.
Earth with Extra PerksI will give the author credit for writing sci-fi for youth in a well-done, entertaining fashion; especially as writing sci-fi at all is a difficult chore.
I Liked It......but the narrative-type writing caused it to drone on at times. Not that it wasn't an interesting story, but a little more dialogue would have certainly broken up the monotony of the narrative.
So Much PotentialWhen reading the synopsis of this book, it intrigued me. Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Top 100 Finalist and an author who was a pilot himself, to me meant personal experience that could lend to the character’s flying skills, understanding of the flight controls better than anyone just researching it and bring me back into a world of aviation. I was correct, in that regard only.
I have five criteria that I use for reviewing a book and this one hit all the marks.
