That is always one of the first things I look for when I start a book: is the punctuation correct, sentences complete, tenses right, spelling good, etc., then it's on to the story.
While this one did have entertaining dialogue (yay!), the plot was the only thing failing what could have been a five-star book. I knew that there would be trouble at the opening description of the turtle-like aliens. It was as if the author sort of knew what he wanted the aliens to be, but hadn't quite fleshed them out, so it ended up falling flat. Fortunately, the interaction between Ollie and Constance in the next chapter salvaged it.
This probably would have been a good enough story, even without the alien interjection, as they played such a small part in it after all.
