A Middle-Aged Character...
...which was a refreshing change from the typical we see in novels nowadays.
It's such a rare treat to read a well-written character with all of life's frailties. Andy sits at her dying mother's kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee and smoking a cigarette, traveling through time in her mind. An escape from her current life or an attempt to find answers of a confused unfulfilled life?
Then she takes the reader down memory lane, of people she's encountered along the way. Some moments told in such a brutal fashion as to make the reader cringe, like when Andy got her period for the first time and had to fashion a sanitary napkin from tissue and toilet paper.
This is not an upbeat read. It will tug at your emotions, not only because of how well-written it was, but also because of how realistic and poignant.
