A lot happening, but...
...the author did a good job making it all cohesive.
Her serial killer weaves through the story along with the detectives and a ragtag group of teenagers: Daisy, Avia, Jesus, and Tommy. Primarily, Daisy, whose life has been upset by so much tragedy that it's truly incomprehensible. She finds a sort-of family with the other teens, equally tragic.
The story opens with the discovery of the body of Alice and then quickly turns its focus on the potential witness, Daisy. The author relays Daisy's story through a series of well-placed and well-told flashbacks, through which we come to sympathize with her a great deal. The dialogue was well-written also. Not cheesy and cliché as some crime-writers tend to make it. There's an actual edge to Detective van Dann that I really liked that is balanced by the level-headed Detective Martinez.
Overall, I really enjoyed this debut novel and look forward to reading the continuations.
