Reminiscent of Yargo
Yargo was a book written decades ago about a woman who gets transported to an alien world and ends up changing their world inadvertently and, yes, there's the love story angle also.
Back to this book there are also the cliché aliens, right down to the clicking noise they make (anyone else immediately think of Shamalan's "Signs" movie?) So, is the story really unique? Not overly.
The opening however did hook me and was written well. For some reason though, after that, it slipped a bit -- both in the level of writing and the plot. The alien she begins to communicate within a page is suddenly fluent in English and wants to start up a romantic relationship with her. From there after, other than the occasional mention of him being an alien or explaining their alien culture, it's no different than every other cliché romance novel on the market.
Should I say "kudos" to the author for attempting to write a typical romance using an alien character? I probably would have been more inclined had the story maintained the uniqueness that it had at the onset. Instead, I'll just say it wasn't poorly written, simplistic, but I was hoping for something more than the author provided.
